a new sister, a new bed.

Sunday

Hadley is almost here, which means Mikey has to pass the torch down to his little sister, and give up the crib. I've been a little worried about this day, because in all my research on transitioning from a crib to toddler bed, almost all mom's said NOT to transition before 2 years old.

Well, I'm breaking the mold.

Having another baby with Mikey being nearly 17 months old and having 2 cribs seems silly to me. After much thought and consideration, Michael and I believed that our little dude was ready to sleep in a regular bed, but which one? The possibilities are endless when it comes to toddler beds! Again, I researched, and researched, and researched and then decided I didn't want a toddler bed at all. Why buy something he will grow out of so quickly?! Why not just skip the toddler bed and go straight to a twin size? So that's exactly what we did.

Now for my next challenge, which twin size bed? I still wanted a railing to he wouldn't roll off, but I wanted the bed to last him more than a year or 2. I felt like once I jumped one hurdle, I only kept running into another. I knew exactly what I wanted the bed to look like, but I just couldn't find the one that took my breath away. So, I decided to make one.

Introducing Mikey's new bed - made from re purposed pallet wood!

I'm obsessed with this bed. Thank you to my Step-Dad, Mike, for helping me build this beauty! It's exactly what I had envisioned, and Mikey loves the freedom.

Some things about this bed:

1. I found inspiration for this bed HERE*Of course, Mikey's bed is quite a bit different, but this post really sparked my design for creating a toddler bed out of pallets.
*Follow me on Pinterest for more cool kid room ideas!
2. This bed is on wheels. Being made totally of wood, it's heavy. Really heavy. Putting the bed on casters lets me move it around the room, and clean underneath it when I need to. Mikey isn't big enough to move it, though.
3. The toddler rail is totally removable. Like I said before, I wanted something that would fit him now ... and later. He won't be a toddler forever, so it was important to me that this railing can be used when needed, and removed when the time came.
4. This is a twin sized bed. I can sleep on it, Michael can sleep on it. A standard twin sized mattress is what we have on the bed which leaves room for growth.
5. I sanded and sealed the bed to eliminate splinters. I seemed to get that question a lot from my family and friends when they saw the bed. It typically went something like "Isn't he going to get a splinter from all that old wood?" Of course, I don't want my kid waking up every morning with pieces of wood in his skin, so we sanded and sealed the bed to make sure that didn't happen!

This new bed is perfect for their shared room, and gives that rustic boy feel to Mikey's space that I was looking for. I couldn't be more happy with the final result, and neither could Mikey!

Toddler Tales - favorites as we transition from baby to toddler

Saturday

My child has grown so much over the last year and a half, and as we transition from baby to toddler, I find myself wondering up and down aisles trying to figure out what the best products are. I feel so out of the loop! I had just mastered shopping for a baby, established my favorite brands, and completed all the necessary research and it then BAM! he isn't a baby anymore. It can really break a mom's heart.

I found that there is a ton of information out there about baby products. Great reviews, blog posts and explanations of all things baby, but I really had a hard time finding any worthwhile information on toddler products. What works? What doesn't?

Here is a list of my favorite finds for my new toddler.

1. Plastic Plates - target dollar bin is the best place to find these plastic serving dishes for kids right now. They are $1 a piece and they have a variety for boys and girls. The plate featured is Skip Hop Zoo Divided Plates, and is great for keeping food separate while your little one learns to eat all on his own.

2. Child Tumblers - this thing is awesome, and Mikey loves drinking from a cup like Momma's. If your little one is into drinking from a straw, I highly recommend picking one of these up.

3. Graco Soft Transitions Potty Training Seat - Potty training is hard. That could be a whole different post itself. This potty training seat has been incredible in our journey through training, and it transitions 3 ways to help your little one through the process. I highly recommend!

4. Mix and Match PJ's - These mix and match pajamas are so much fun. Mikey loves dressing himself now, and the fun colors and prints get him excited about bedtime. They are perfect for potty-training kids and make him feel like he's independent enough to pick out his own clothes.

5. KidKraft Sling Bookshelf - The older he gets, the more and more interested Mikey becomes in books. The illustrations keep him interested, and he loves to listen to Momma or Daddy read to him before bed. This is such a neat and clean way to store books while allowing them to be on display for your little to choose their favorite one!

6. BabyTrend Sit n Stand Double Stroller - Having a baby sister will really change Mikey's riding situation. We have been taking this bad boy out for a few test runs before the new baby arrives, and he has really enjoyed it! He loves that he can sit in front or back, or has the ability to stand if he wants a little more freedom. Momma and Daddy love it, too.

Wednesday

I love Target. I really, really love it. The dollar bins are always stocked full of things did I love, and Their home decor and furniture sections hold a special place in my heart. Michael loves the t-shirts that they have, and I can't walk past the Women's clothing without stopping to take a look. I can't spend less than 30 minutes in the baby section for my little people, and I always find myself walking out with some type of purchase.

As you can see, I'm not the only one who likes checking out the One Spot finds!

Recently while scrolling through Instagram (@l_rotundo), I ran across an instagram-er who shares deals and discounts at Target. Swoon. I had no idea that Target had so many great deals and coupons!

If you are a Target shopper who likes saving money (and who doesn't?!) then this is your place to easily find deals and coupons directly on your instagram feed. She posts regularly with deals, steals and coupons that help shoppers get the most bang for their buck.

She's worth the follow! Now excuse me while I head to Target ....

Bringing back date night

Tuesday

Michael and I have been married for almost 3 years now. We have 1 child and we are days away from delivering our 2nd bundle of joy. With that being said, date night has turned into a thing of the past.

Between chasing our wild child, keeping up with the Army life and anticipating the arrival of our next kid, we don't have a lot of time on our hands. It's become very apparent recently that Momma and Dad could use a night out. Not a crazy night out or anything, just a night to ourselves to have an adult conversation about something other than diapers, what's for dinner, or what the next weeks schedule looks like.

Here is a list of a few date night idea's that are cheap (or free!) to help bring back date night.

1. Netflix Night In {FREE!} - Netflix is a valued thing in this house, but mostly to watch Jake and the Neverland Pirates. We rarely have the chance to watch an adult movie, or follow a series that we enjoy. I can't even begin to tell you how nice it is to cuddle up on my own couch, wearing my favorite sweatpants with my husband and enjoying an adult movie together. It's truly a relaxing way to spend some quality time with your spouse!

2. Drive-In Movie - Drive-in films are a cool experience. Not every town has a drive-in theater, but do a little research to see if there is one near you. It's so fun to pack up the car, bring your favorite snacks and drinks, and sit outside beneath the stars and get out of the house with your loved one! If you haven't been to a drive-in movie, it's worth the trip!

3. Day at the park {FREE!} - Sometimes dates can take place in the afternoon, and if you are looking for a day date, this is the way to go! Take a walk around the park and take in the view, grab a few bikes and exercise together, or grab a bench and talk. Have a picnic outside and enjoy some sunshine. There are so many things that you can do at the park!

4. Have a Picnic - This could tie in with #3, but having a picnic, no matter where you have it, can be a fun way to relax and talk to your spouse. Picnic's are so fun, and can even be a surprise date if your looking to add a little spark to the date!

5. 21 Questions {FREE!} - Create a list of 21 questions that you want to ask your spouse, and have them do the same thing, then spend the night asking one another questions. This is such a great way to get to know a little bit more about your spouse, share your dreams and thoughts, and improve your marriage.

6. Make a Meal Night - Pick a night and a meal and make it with your spouse. Many towns offer cooking classes that you can participate in, or you could head to the grocery store together to grab the ingredients of your favorite meal and make it together at home! Michael and I do homemade pizza night a lot, and we have so much fun making our own pizza's in our kitchen while the kids are asleep.

7. Ice Cream Date - This is a little traditional, but I love ice cream, so it's always a win for me. Spend an hour or 2 in the ice cream parlor enjoying your favorite flavors and having adult conversation. Even an hour together can really add a new life to your marraige.

8. Scavenger Hunt - Plan a fun scavenger hunt for your loved one. Pick some of their favorite things to hide, and create clues to lead them to the items. This can be a fun surprise, and a way to let your spouse know that you are thinking of them, and appreciate them for what they do!

9. Dinner Date - Of course. How could this not be on here? Sometime's is so nice to have a nice meal cooked for you, dress up, and spend an evening having a drink with your spouse. Hire a good babysitter and treat yourselves!

10. Art Date - A lot of towns have some type of ceramics shop or craft stores that have classes where you can create something together. Michael and I have went to our local ceramics shop before to spend some time together and you get a fun gift out of it. It's super fun to create something together!

Here is my list of dates that work for us! Most of them are super cheap or free, and they are things that we would recommend. It's important to spend quality time together, so get out there and bring date night back!

6 Daily Cleaning Schedule to hep keep track of the time!

Tomorrow I will be talking about some room inspiration, and sharing some big news on the blog!

'tis the season to be cleaning // Part 1 + a free printable!

Thursday

Cleaning during the holiday season can be stressful and overwhelming. Entertaining a house full of guests takes a lot of work, and I know from personal experience, cleaning for all of the excitement during the holiday season is my least favorite chore on my list! That's why I'm sharing my tips and tricks for holiday cleaning in a 3-part series!

Part 1 - Daily Cleaning!

It's always easier to stay on top of housework when you have a cleaning routine. Some people like daily, weekly or monthly routines. I find for me, a weekly routine works best. This routine doesn't get down to the nitty gritty, on you hands and knees with a brush scrubbing the kitchen floor kind of cleaning. Instead, it takes care of the everyday, maintenance cleaning to keep a clean and tidy house. If your home is already clean and tidy when you start the holiday cleaning, it lessens the blow for those deep cleaning days!

Right-click the image, save to computer, print!

This is what works for me! I tackle a section of my house each day of the week, along with my daily tasks. This routine as proven effective for my household, and I've even gotten Michael on board to help! SCORE! The best part about this schedule, it's editable! If I don't get around to cleaning the living room because I have an FRG meeting, or cheerleading practice, then I can do it tomorrow. If Wednesday's are busy days for you, and you can't commit the time needed to the kitchen, switch it out for another day. It's easy!

Part 2 coming tomorrow!

Edelweiss Lodge & Resort, here we come!

Michael and I will be heading to Edelweiss Lodge and Resort next weekend for a marriage retreat hosted by the Army. We have been on one of these before and we absolutely LOVED it! It's so nice to escape the hectic Army life every now and then, and spend some quality time together as a family.

Last time we headed out to Edelweiss I was about 7 months pregnant, so we couldn't do everything we would have liked to. For example, I couldn't spend 8 hours a day snowboarding with Michael or get in the giant hot tub that they have! It's outdoors and it's bitchin'!

We were able to check out Neuschwanstein Castle, also known as the Disney castle. This castle was the inspiration for Magic Kingdom's Cinderella Castle and it is beautiful.

Neuschwanstein Castle - Yes, we saw this live and in person. We even went inside!

Taking the carriage ride up to the castle, and checking out the view from the front. We did get much closer to the castle than this, and even toured the inside. No pictures allowed of the inside though :(

You can read more about our last trip here!

This time around, we are going during the holiday season, so they offer a few different things. Michael and I will be able to take Mikey on a horse and carriage ride through downtown Garmish, hit the Christmas market, go night sledding, and take the Partnach Gorge Night Tour which is lit by torch. I'm sure this time around, since childcare is offered, Michael and I will be able to do a little snowboarding as well. He really loves snowboarding.

Innsbruck Christmas Market, probably the most festive thing I'll ever do IN.MY.LIFE!

My favorite event from the trip will be the scenery, I'm sure of it. As I was searching the ***** website, I ran across a little nugget of information such as this ...

You can bet your sweet behind that we WILL be getting Christmas card photos taken here! HOW INCREDIBLE to show the beautiful scenery of Germany with our friends and family on a holiday card! It's so festive and wonderful and I absolutely can not wait! There is a ton of possible locations that are absolutely breathtaking and it's a great way to remember our time in Germany for years to come.

I've been planning outfits, searching Pinterest high and low for photography ideas, and absolutely dreaming about the wonderful Christmas cards that we will be sending this year. I'll be posting soon about some of my Christmas card photography inspiration!

FA LA LA LA LA!

Thanksgiving Centerpieces - SOLDIER APPROVED!

Monday

Thanksgiving is only 24 days away, I can't believe how close it is!

We have been slowly preparing our house for the festivities that are upon us for the holiday season. In the meantime, our FRG leader has taken leave and went back to the United States, so I have stepped in to help with some of the event planning and meetings that take place.

One of these events is a Thanksgiving Potluck for all of 16th STB. Our FRG is responsible for providing the decorations for the event, and the Commander has so generously donated the time of his soldiers to arrange centerpieces. I thought to myself,

"Where am I going to find a festive centerpiece that a bunch of soldiers can assemble?"

and then it dawned on me, KIDS CRAFTS! I searched high and low for some Thanksgiving kids crafts, and ran across this little gem ...

Source here!

I thought this was so cute, and since we are providing decorations for over 300 people, this cute little turkey would be easy and quick to assemble (and soldier approved!). We can slap these things on all the dining tables and call it a festive centerpiece :)

What are your favorite centerpieces for Thanksgiving?

Meal Time Monday {Loaded Baked Potato Soup}

It's almost October! The start of fall is here, and the cold weather is upon us. I love to warm things up with some Loaded Baked Potato Soup on a cold day. This recipe is super easy, and perfect for a Sunday Football part, a lazy afternoon, or a day when you don't have much time.

Here ya go! :)

Ingredients
8 slices bacon
3/4 cup diced celery
1 diced onion
6-8 Russett potatoes peeled & cut into 1-inch pieces
6 cups chicken stock
2 tbsp unsalted butter
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
1 cup whole milk
1/2 cup heavy cream
Shredded cheddar cheese
Sour cream
Sliced scallions

Directions
1. Cook bacon in a large pan until crispy, transfer bacon onto paper towel lined plate & transfer
1/4 cup of bacon drippings into a separate large pot.
2. With bacon drippings on medium-low, add the celery and onions to the pan and cook, stirring occasionally, until onions are translucent.

3. Increase heat to medium and then add the potatoes, stirring to combine. Cook the potatoes for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, then add the chicken stock. (The chicken stock should just cover the potatoes, so depending on your pot, you may have to add more stock.)
4. Bring the soup to a simmer then cover the pot and cook the soup for 10 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork-tender.
5. In a separate saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. When butter is melted, whisk in the flour to make a roux. Stir the roux constantly for 1 to 2 minutes until it's pale golden colored, then whisk in the milk. Bring the mixture to a boil and cook it, stirring constantly, until it's thickened slightly (for just a minute or two, until you get the consistency of gravy).
6. Whisk the milk/roux mixture into the potato mixture and cook the soup for 5 minutes over medium-low heat.
7. Remove the soup from the heat. Transfer 1/3 of the soup to a medium bowl. Using a hand blender, purée the soup that's remaining in the pot until it's smooth. Return the reserved 1/3 of the soup to the pot, stirring to combine.
8. Stir in the heavy cream and season the soup with salt & pepper. When ready to serve, top each bowl of soup with the cooked bacon, shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream and scallions.

Hitscherhof Pumpkin Farm Festival

Wednesday

Michael and I recently took a trip to a Pumpkin Festival about an hour away from Baumholder. We thought it would be fun to check out some German culture and take Mikey to pick out his first pumpkin. To our surprise, most of the festival goers were American's!

The pumpkin farm is nestled in this ADORABLE little town, and hosts lots of booths with fun German crafts, foods, and many other things to check out! They even had a gigantic pumpkin!

We checked out some of the fresh German food they had to offer, which was AWESOME!

They had all sorts of pumpkins from big to small to pick from lined up along the festival, and those things were CHEAP! #score

We got Mikey his first pumpkin, and HE LOVED IT!

Looking at his pumpkin ....

"I think I might like this thing..."

Giving his pumpkin kisses!

Michael and I picked up some German crafts to send back home to our families, and enjoyed some German beer! No matter where you go in Germany, beer is always involved.

Mikey really enjoyed riding around in the stroller and checking out everything there was to see. He has become quite the little adventurer since we have gotten here!

While we were there we even found the time to snag a few family photos! Neither one of us were ready and we are looking a hot mess but HEY! Who cares?!

We had a blast at Hitscherhof farms, and look forward to checking out more German festivals in the upcoming fall weekends! Up next, possibly an apple festival?! I'm feeling some authentic apple cider.

As we were leaving the festival, we put Mikey in his car seat and he LOST.HIS.SHIT. when we took his pumpkin away from him, so we gave it back and all was right in the world. This little guy loves his pumpkin!

Meal Planning and Grocery Shopping How-To

Thursday

I absolutely hate grocery shopping!
I guess I shouldn't say I hate it, I should say it absolutely stresses my husband out more than anything in the world so he's mean and it's miserable.

Seriously, that's how it goes when the Rotundo clan heads to the grocery store. Michael and I both know it's about to be miserable, so we just expect the worse.

I don't know why it stresses him out so bad? Michael isn't really a planner, so the fact that I'm the Grocery Nazi and have a plan and a list and a calculator and coupons galore kind of stresses him out, I think. I don't know.

Anyways - Grocery shopping is a serious process for us.

Step 1: Meal Plan

This can be overwhelming for somebody who has never made a meal plan before, so if your a first timer, start small. I began meal planning by just simply developing themed nights. This is how it first looked:

Monday - Crockpot Night
Tuesday - Chicken Night
Wednesday - Pasta Night
Thursday - Breakfast for Dinner Night
Friday - Homemade Pizza Night
Saturday - Grill Night
Sunday - Leftovers

Themed nights helped me get an idea of what I was cooking for the month. I knew I needed a few pasta dishes, some things I could throw in the crockpot, things to make pizza, etc. I have stuck true to my themed nights, even though I have advanced from beginner to total professional in the meal planning department.

Once you are comfortable with meal planning, start by making a specific plan for the whole month. Michael and I plan out every meal, but this is what our calendar looks like for the month of August.

We have made a detailed plan for lunch and dinner, and I pre-make breakfast and freeze it so Michael can eat it when he wakes up at the crack of dawn to head to PT. I also pre-make snacks. Goldfish, fruit-roll up's, pizza rolls, etc.

Step 2: Shop in your own kitchen!

Once I know what I'm making for the month, I start inventorying my own kitchen. Why buy marinara sauce if I already have a jar? The goal is to save money, so by inventorying my kitchen, I know what I don't NEED to buy. Once I know what I have, I'm ready to look through my recipes and start constructing my grocery list. I use these templates to create my inventory:
You can download these in my etsy shop here!

Step 3: Make your list!

Michael and I don't do the whole only-going-to-the-commissary-one-time thing. It's too craycray for us. We go once every 2 weeks. This cuts down on time, after all, Mikey isn't all too excited to go to the grocery store and Michael is about to explode by the time we leave so the quicker the better! I reference my meal plan, and recipes for the first two weeks of the month, as well as my kitchen inventory and make a grocery list accordingly. I know this all sounds like a long and drawn-out process, but once you get the hang of it, it takes no time at all! Knowing what I have and what I need is really helpful.
TIP: Never, ever, ever, ever go to the grocery store without a list! You will forget something you need, or you will buy things you don't need. Take the time now to make your list instead of wasting your time later making trip after trip to the store because you forgot something!

Step 4: Shop!

Don't forget your coupons! After you know what you're eating and you've made your list, it's time to collect your items. For us, it's easier to go together, but some people prefer to shop alone. I'm sure as Mikey gets older, I will want him to stay home so he isn't begging for oreo's or fruit roll-up's or something. (Michael totally still begs for those things!)

We are able to stick with our budget easily using this method. Seriously, this has saved us so much money! Meal planning has cut down on our fast food spending by more than 75%. Michael and I used to take the easy way out and head to McDonald's (because it's the only thing here) instead of taking the time to cook dinner. I think we did this because we simply didn't know what to make. I used to roam the aisles of the grocery store clueless as to what I needed to make a "meal". Now we know, and we eat breakfast, lunch and dinner at home. We go out once a month, on the 29th. It's our anniversary as well as the date that Mikey was born so we go out as a family to celebrate!

Now that you have the tips and tricks, start planning mi amigos!

Financial Overhaul - budgeting tips and tricks that work for us!

At some point in each day, I find myself thinking about our budget. We've come to learn that budgeting can often times be extremely difficult. In our first year of marriage, I can assure you that we tried every budgeting trick in the book, but we couldn't find anything that worked for us.

We have very different spending habits. Michael is an impulse buyer and I need months to consider even the smallest of purchases. We had a really difficult time finding a budget that worked for both of us, until now.

After searching the internet for tips and ideas, I gathered a list of things I thought would work, tested them, and found what helped us budget, save money, and pay off debt. Here are a few of our ideas ...

BUDGET:

Our budget works a little like this, the last week of each month, we sit down together and write down all of our bills. This is money we know must be spent on things like car payments, insurance, groceries, gas, etc. We look at previous spending on these things and then together we come up with a number that we think is reasonable to budget for these expenses. It's easier to itemize each expense, so you know exactly where your money is going. This is the format we tend to use ...

Click here for a downloadable copy that you can fill out yourself!

We then look at the money we have left over from the months income, and place half of it in savings. With the remaining half of the left over money, together we decide what we would like to do with it. It may be as simple as put it back for a date night that month, or make an extra car payment. We have set up a rule that if we cannot agree collectively on what to do with the extra money, then we will divide it down the middle and I can do whatever I want with my half, and Michael can do the same.

The key here, is coming up with the budget together. This helps to get both people on the same page, and allows you to hold yourselves accountable.

Once we have created our budget, we check back weekly. In our house, Thursday's are the best days to sit down and look it all over, so every Thursday around 4:00pm, Michael and I sit down and look at that weeks spending. We are able to see if we are staying within budget, and shows us how much wiggle room we have for the rest of the month. For example: If we have allotted $300 on groceries for the month, but within our first trip to the commissary we spent $200 of our allotted money, we know that our second trip to the commissary only allows for $100 to be spent. It really helps to sit down WEEKLY!
TIP: During your weekly budget meeting, make sure that there are no interruptions. This helps you and your spouse focus 100% on your finances.

SPENDING:

Once our budget is set, Michael and I head off to the ATM and withdraw our money. You heard me, we withdraw it from the bank. The reason behind this ... you can see the cash leave your hand, making it hurt a little bit more. Swiping your card is easy, too easy. We have found that swiping our card for everything encourages overspending.

Once we withdraw the money, I look at my budget and place the allotted amount into the corresponding envelope. Like this:

I used this template from Paige's Little Blog for my money envelopes.
Click here to download the template

I love these envelopes because it allows me to document my spending in each category, and I can print as many as I want from home! This is a really helpful tool for staying within your budget. Like before, if I have allotted $300 for grocery shopping, I take my envelope with me, and when the $300 runs out, that's it. A post coming soon about how I grocery shop!

SAVING:

Michael and I use coupons quite often. Why the heck not if it helps save money?? Aside from coupon cutting, we also go homemade on everything we possibly can. I make my own homemade cleaners and laundry detergents, as well as my own homemade mixes. Going homemade saves TONS of money!

We also budget in money for savings. We allot a specific amount each month for savings, almost like an expense. This ensures that the money actually makes it to the savings account! We also take any left over money at the end of our budget and deposit half of that into our savings account. Savings is important!!

Another NEW technique we have adopted is creating savings accounts for each member of the family. We have a family checking account as well as a family savings account that Michael and I both have access to. We then have savings accounts for myself, Michael and Mikey. We deposit a certain amount of money each month into Mikey's account, and plan to give that to him when he is older, maybe for the purchase of his first car, or as a graduation gift? We haven't decided yet. The savings accounts for Michael and myself and exactly that, for us as individuals. When we cannot agree on what to do with our leftover money, we can place it in our savings accounts and use it however we wish. Michael likes to buy parts for his car, so this money can go towards that hobby. I am a crafter, so my funds may go to buying a new crafting tool or supplies. It's completely up to us! The money can also sit in the savings account and we can use it for a large purchase, such as a really nice anniversary gift or a super cool birthday present for our baby boy. Having a savings account for each member of the family is something that we love, Love, LOVE! This gives us the freedom to spend money on ourselves without feeling guilty, but also gives us the opportunity to surprise each other without the other one finding out on a bank statement. LOL

These are all things that work for our family. What works for yours?

Meal-Time Monday {Crockpot Breakfast Scramble}

Monday

Here at our house, breakfast is a big deal. Not for me, I'm not a breakfast-foods kind of person. Michael, on the other hand, would eat breakfast foods non-stop if I would let him.

Because Michael has to get up ENTIRELY too early to go to PT, and most of the time gets ready, goes to PT AND comes home before I'm ever even awake, I typically don't have breakfast ready for him. Sad, I know.

QUE THE INSPIRATIONAL MUSIC ....

Here is where this weeks recipe comes in. I can throw it in the crockpot the night before, and in the morning, he can serve himself and I don't ever have to be awake! PERFECT!

Myth #1: You're so used to following orders that you might as well continue in the civilian workforce by working for someone else.

Truth: You might be great at following orders after your military career, but that doesn't mean you won't make it as a leader in civilian life. Many veterans opt to start their own businesses or purse management tracks at large companies because of their service and experience in the military. Taking directions could lend itself to a better understanding of what it means to lead, which is why so many veterans make great leaders. If you need help getting started, then check out the excellent resources offered by the U.S. Small Business Administration, which helps veterans develop and hone entrepreneurial skills.

Myth #2: Employers just don't care about applicants.

Truth: In today's civilian workforce, employers care deeply about hiring good employees who will contribute to their overall success as a company. As such, they've streamlined the hiring process while also adding attractive perks and incentives for new hires. Some top companies use mobile recruiting platforms like JIBE, which allow you to post your resume and other documents right from your smartphone. Other companies invest in incentives like onsite gyms, yearly performance bonuses and company cars.

Myth #3: As a veteran, you don't have many options for employment, and it's hard to find a good job.

Truth: There are a variety of organizations and programs that will help you find a job such as 100,000 Jobs Mission, which is designed specifically to help connect veterans with employers who need their skills and traits. This organization includes many top employers across the country, and you can access information like pay rate, necessary degrees and open positions.

Myth #4: Nobody's hiring.

Truth: When you first start looking for a job, it might seem like no one is hiring. In reality, you may not know all the tricks to using job boards and other sites. Try broadening your focus to the industries you enjoy as well as related careers. The economy is recovering, which means that many top employers are expanding their practices and may offer jobs that didn't exist before the recession. The healthcare industry, for example, is almost always hiring. You might also consider freelance or contract work during slow periods; many employers hire these types of workers to fill vacancies while their business recovers.
